From the Police Force to the Horse Arena: How Horses Change Lives

When I first joined the WA Police, I thought I had a pretty clear idea of what leadership and influence looked like. I quickly learned it wasn’t about rank, or how loud you could shout. It was about connection — and the ability to truly earn trust.
But I didn’t fully understand the depth of that lesson until I brought horses into the mix.
The Power of Horses with People on the Edge
During my time in the police, I piloted a program called “Say Neigh to Crime” — aimed at some of the state’s most entrenched juvenile offenders. These were young people who had cycled through the justice system again and again. Traditional approaches weren’t working.
What did work? Horses.
When these tough, hardened teenagers stood in front of a horse, something shifted. The bravado fell away. They couldn’t manipulate or bluff their way through, because horses don’t respond to lies or intimidation. They respond only to authenticity, calmness, and consistency.
The results were outstanding. For the first time, these young people experienced success not through force, but through connection. They built confidence, empathy, and self-control — skills that many had never been taught, but desperately needed.
Why I Chose Retired Racehorses
After leaving the police and battling my own journey with PTSD and anxiety, I knew I wanted to keep working with horses in a way that made a difference. But I also wanted to give something back to the animals who had given me so much.
That’s why all of the horses in Gallop to Greatness are retired racehorses except one - Milo the patchy pony with PTSD. Most people would have discarded them, passing them on to uncertain fates. I chose differently. These horses now live in a safe, trusting environment — and in return, they’re helping people heal, grow, and lead.
Every program fee goes directly into their care. This isn’t just about human transformation; it’s about honouring the horses who make it possible.
Why These Programs Work for Everyone
You don’t need to be a troubled teen to benefit from the power of horses. Whether you’re a corporate executive under pressure, someone battling anxiety, or simply someone who’s lost touch with themselves in our fast-paced, online world — horses provide the same mirror.
They show you how you show up in the world. They teach you the strength of calm leadership, the necessity of clear communication, and the importance of empathy.
And the lessons stick — because you don’t just hear them, you feel them.
From Crime Prevention to Confidence Building
What started as an experimental program for young offenders has grown into a life-long mission. I’ve seen hardened teenagers soften, anxious adults find calm, and executives rediscover clarity — all thanks to the silent lessons of a horse.
For me, it’s simple: horses change lives, because they changed mine.
